Bergamo
Bergamo is divided into two: the upper city, the ancient village, and the lower city, the beating heart of commercial life. Connected to each other for 120 years by a funicular, which crossing the walls will make you fall in love with the panorama.
Upper City
Colleoni Chapel
The facade decorated with red and white marble, the sarcophagi entirely inlaid in marble, the carved wood of the benches, make it a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.
The cathedral and the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
Next to the Chapel are the Cathedral with Baroque interiors and the austere Basilica whose portal is framed by columns supported by reddish lions.
Venetian walls
Along the 5 km of the Venetian walls, which encloses the Upper City, you can admire a spectacular landscape. You will find the gunboats which can be visited on weekends, from April to October. From the telescopes, on the other hand, you can even see Milan!
Old square
It is the oldest heart of the city. On the sides it contains historic buildings such as the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo della Ragione. Above all, the medieval tower stands out and still today, at 10 in the evening, it rings 100 tolls, in memory of when the city gates were closed.
Recommended restaurant: Baretto di San Vigilio
Lower city
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
Built in 1137, in honor of the Madonna who had pardoned the people of Bergamo for an epidemic of plague. The Basilica is characterized by the lack of a central entrance and the facade, which is unique with the building next to it.
San Tomé Temple
A church with a round base, isolated among fields and built on ancient Roman tombs.
